About the Tour
Embark on an unforgettable 4-mile kayak journey through Hilo Bay and the Wailuku River, where Hawaiian history, mythology, and natural beauty come together in one incredible adventure. Designed for experienced paddlers, this tour offers both challenge and reward as you explore one of East Hawaiʻi’s most iconic waterways.
Your journey begins on the calm waters of Hilo Bay, one of the largest and most recognizable bays in the islands. Paddle past Coconut Island (Moku Ola), a sacred place of refuge in ancient times. According to legend, those who were ill could swim around the island three times to be healed. As you move through these storied waters, your guide will share tales of warriors, gods, and the deep cultural significance of the bay.
Along the way, enjoy sweeping views of historic Hilo Town, once a thriving center for sugar plantations and sampan fishing fleets before two devastating tsunamis reshaped the coastline in 1946 and 1960. Keep your eyes open for Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) gliding through the lagoon as you paddle beneath the famous Singing Bridge — named for the humming sound it produces as cars pass overhead.
Your adventure continues up the Wailuku River, where lush scenery, waterfalls, and banyan trees frame the route. Brave guests may even try swinging from the overhanging branches into the refreshing lagoon below. This journey is equal parts cultural exploration, workout, and pure Hawaiian magic.
