What to Expect

Get prepared for solo paddling with sea kayaking essentials!

This class is designed to introduce the basic skills required to safely sea kayak by yourself. After completing this class, students will gain the skills needed to rent our sea kayaks!

Students will learn about & practice:
- Necessary equipment for sea kayaking
- Paddle strokes
- Wet exit and self-rescue maneuvers
- Cold water safety
- On-water safety communication

In this class, you will be reviewing all skills on land before you take to the water. Students will gear up for their paddle, which includes boat preparation and dressing for cold-water immersion with provided wetsuits. On water, you will apply your new skills with stroke & boat maneuvering practice, before practicing capsize & "wet exit" (exiting the boat while underwater). You will have instructor support with this wet exit, and with the following deep water self-rescue re-entry (getting back into the boat!)

Prerequisites: None! For a true beginner's introduction to sea kayaking, check our our First Splash class, which will not involve wet exit or self-rescue.

Next Steps: This course is designed as a prerequisite to our Rescues & Recoveries class, which includes more advanced boat maneuvering & two-person rescue techniques. These classes are offered in succession for a full weekend of kayak skill growth!

If you complete both classes or you are an experienced paddler looking for even more growth, inquire about volunteering to assist with our programs!

We do not want cost to be a barrier from participation. Our scholarship program can be found here.
