What to Expect

This full-day 10.5-mile river trip on the Upper James River Water Trail offers about 5 to 6 hours of paddling through lots of class I and II rapids. The run features scenic mountain and wilderness views and is popular with summer camps, scouts, and group bookings. Trips depart from the Buchanan riverfront and conclude at the Alpine boat landing, with a required shuttle back to the Twin Rivers Outfitters main store. The experience is a step up in difficulty and excitement from shorter floats in the area.
