Discover Naguabo - El Hippie Waterfalls, Monkey Island & the Famous Malecón
Charco El Hippie waterfalls. Monkey Island from shore. Beachfront seafood at the Malecón de Naguabo.
What to Expect
This isn't another bus tour hitting the same spots everyone else does. Discover Naguabo is a small-group, guided day tour through Puerto Rico's hidden east coast — waterfalls, wildlife, two historic plazas, and a beachfront seafood stop that locals have kept to themselves for generations.
Your day starts at a local bakery with Puerto Rican coffee and fresh pastries — the way mornings are supposed to begin in Puerto Rico. From there, we drive you into the mountains to Charco El Hippie on the south side of El Yunque, where the Río Blanco forms crystal-clear swimming holes, waterfalls, and caves with ancient Taíno petroglyphs. You get 90 minutes to swim, explore, and take it all in — no rushing.
Next, we visit the only municipality in Puerto Rico with two town plazas. The story of why involves Carib warriors, a burned settlement, and a town that refused to disappear. Your guide brings the history to life.
At the coast, we walk the shoreline across from Cayo Santiago — Monkey Island — home to 1,800 rhesus macaques that have lived there since 1938. You'll hear the full story of how they survived Hurricane Maria and how the storm changed their behavior in ways that surprised scientists around the world.
Then it's time to eat. The famous Malecón de Naguabo is one of Puerto Rico's most iconic beachfront promenades — over 30 seafood restaurants and kiosks right on the Caribbean. Fishermen bring in the catch each morning and it's on your plate by lunch. This is where local families go, not tourists. Order the famous pastelillos de chapín, a whole fried snapper, or whatever looks good. You eat at your own pace with ocean views and nowhere to be.
We finish the day with a nature walk at Playa El Corcho, a quiet mangrove bay that's home to Moisés — a Caribbean manatee rescued in 1991 who became a national celebrity and still lives in these waters today.
