Science of Diving
Training extended range while having fun!
What to Expect
The SSI Science of Diving specialty certification is a comprehensive, theory-focused program that gives divers a deeper understanding of the principles behind scuba diving. Rather than focusing on in-water skills, this course explores the science that makes diving possible, helping you become a more knowledgeable, confident, and capable diver.
Throughout the program, you’ll study key areas such as physics, physiology, decompression theory, and the aquatic environment. You’ll learn how pressure affects the body and equipment, how gases behave underwater, and how dive tables and computers are used to plan safe dives. The course also covers topics like breathing gas mixtures, nitrogen absorption, and how to reduce the risk of diving-related conditions such as Decompression Sickness.
In addition, the program introduces divers to marine science concepts, including underwater ecosystems and environmental awareness, as well as the basic principles behind dive equipment function and maintenance. This knowledge allows divers to better understand what’s happening during a dive and make informed decisions in a variety of situations.
The SSI Science of Diving specialty is entirely academic, making it accessible anywhere without the need for open water dives. It also serves as a key component toward advanced recognition levels within the Scuba Schools International system, such as Divemaster.
By completing this certification, divers gain a solid scientific foundation that enhances safety, sharpens decision-making, and deepens appreciation for the underwater world.
