What to Expect

The SSI Recreational Sidemount Diving Specialty certification introduces divers to an alternative equipment configuration that emphasizes comfort, flexibility, and streamlined movement in the water. Instead of carrying tanks on their back, sidemount divers wear one or two cylinders along their sides, creating better balance and easier access to their equipment.

Throughout the course, students learn how to properly set up and configure sidemount gear, including harness adjustment, tank attachment, and regulator routing. A major focus is achieving optimal trim and buoyancy, as the sidemount setup allows divers to maintain a more horizontal, streamlined position that reduces drag and improves efficiency.

Gas management is another key element. Divers are trained to monitor and switch between cylinders, ensuring balanced air consumption and maintaining redundancy throughout the dive. This adds an extra layer of safety while also building awareness and control over breathing patterns and equipment use.

The course also covers practical benefits of sidemount diving, such as easier entries and exits, reduced strain on the back, and the ability to remove and replace cylinders in the water. These advantages make sidemount especially appealing for divers looking for more comfort or those planning to progress into overhead environments like caves or wrecks.

By the end of the SSI Recreational Sidemount Specialty, divers gain the skills and confidence to dive with this versatile configuration. It’s an excellent way to enhance control, improve trim, and expand diving possibilities, all while enjoying a more adaptable and ergonomic approach to scuba diving.
