The SSI Equipment Techniques Specialty certification is a practical course focused on helping divers understand, maintain, and optimize their scuba gear for safety, comfort, and performance. Rather than just using equipment as-is, this program teaches you how your gear actually works and how to fine-tune it to match your diving style and environment.

Throughout the course, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the main components of a scuba system—regulators, cylinders, buoyancy compensators (BCDs), exposure protection, and accessories. You’ll learn how to properly assemble and disassemble your setup, perform pre-dive checks, and identify early signs of wear or malfunction.

A key part of the training is equipment care and maintenance. This includes proper cleaning, storage, and transport techniques to extend the life of your gear, as well as knowing when professional servicing is required. You’ll also explore how different configurations—such as hose routing, weighting systems, and accessory placement—can improve streamlining, reduce drag, and enhance overall efficiency underwater.

The course includes hands-on workshops where you practice adjusting your equipment for optimal fit and balance, and may involve in-water sessions to evaluate and refine your setup in real diving conditions.
