Mark your calendars for this insightful panel discussion that will highlight the history of indigenous Pennsylvania Native American Nations and showcase the Susquehanna River as a geographic and cultural current that connects centuries of human history. The following panelists will travel to York to join in our discussion:
Katelyn Lucas: Dr. Katelyn Lucas serves as the Historic Preservation Officer for Delaware Nation, one of the federally recognized Nations of Lenape people now located in Oklahoma as a result of forced removals. Dr. Lucas manages Delaware Nation’s extension office in Lenape homelands, on Lehigh University’s campus in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. She earned her PhD from Temple University, specializing in early American and Native American literatures with an emphasis on Lenape history and sovereignty. Her dissertation traces the evolution and implications of Lenape representation in American literature from colonial captivity narratives to contemporary American fiction.
Levi Randoll is a tribal citizen of the Delaware Tribe of Indians. He is from both the Falleaf and Elkhair families and is member of the Turtle Clan . He serves as the Chairman for the Delaware Tribe of Indians Cultural Preservation Committee and has made appearances teaching about Delaware history and traditional culture, including demonstrations of Delaware/ Lenape song and dance.
Brett Barnes, raised in Quapaw Oklahoma, now resides in Miami, Oklahoma. Brett has served as the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer for the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma as well as the Eastern Shawnee Tribe NAGPRA Board. He has a seated position as a singer and drummer at the White Oak Ceremonial Ground.
The event will be moderated by Mary Ann Levine. She is the Lewis Audenreid Professor of History and Archaeology at Franklin and Marshall college in Lancaster, PA. Her recent work focuses on colonial/indigenous entanglements in the 18th century.
