War on Our Doorsteps Walking Tour
Explore the history of downtown Gettysburg
What to Expect
The Battle of Gettysburg wasn’t fought only on the fields surrounding town. For the people who called Gettysburg home, the war came directly to their doorsteps.
War on Our Doorsteps takes you through the historic streets of Gettysburg to discover the battle from the perspective of the civilians who lived through it. Hear the stories of ordinary men, women, and children whose familiar town was suddenly transformed by thousands of soldiers, wounded men, makeshift hospitals, fear, uncertainty, and the devastating aftermath of three days of battle.
As you walk through the same streets they knew in 1863, you’ll discover what daily life was like before the armies arrived, what happened when fighting moved into town, and how Gettysburg’s residents responded when history unfolded quite literally outside their homes.
This is the story beyond the battlefield: a closer, more personal look at the people who didn’t come to Gettysburg to fight, but found themselves caught in the middle of one of the most important battles in American history.
