What to Expect

Paddle through history and nature on a scenic downstream route from Laytown to Ferguson that winds through the former logging town of Grandin. Glide past National Register landmarks such as Dula-Horton Cemetery and Mariah's Chapel while keeping an eye out for ducks, geese, ospreys, blue herons, eagles, deer and fish. This relaxing self-guided trip suits history buffs, nature lovers, anglers and anyone seeking a calm outdoor paddle; canoes and tandem kayaks require at least two people.

Participant Requirements & River Safety

  • A parent or legal guardian must sign the required waiver for any participant under 18.
  • Physical ability: Participants should be in good health and able to paddle for the expected duration of the trip, as well as safely get in and out of the kayak.
  • Basic paddling skills: Participants should be comfortable controlling and steering a kayak, stopping, and turning.
  • Swimming ability: Participants should be comfortable in moving water and understand what to do in the event of a capsize.
  • Life jackets: A properly fitted life jacket (PFD) must be worn at all times while on the water.
  • Experience: Class I sections are generally suitable for beginners with appropriate instruction and supervision. Beginners should start with shorter or slower sections, while some trips may require prior paddling experience.
  • River conditions: Class I water may still include shallow areas, rocks, shoals, strainers and changing water levels. Conditions can vary depending on weather and water flow.
  • Weather and water temperature: Weather and water conditions can change quickly. Cold water can present additional risks, even on easier sections, so participants should dress appropriately for the conditions.
  • Safety rules: All participants must follow staff instructions and applicable river safety rules at all times.
