Sax Lake Hike & Paddle Tour
A scenic tour by trail & canoe!
What to Expect
A roaring, waterfall-like dam; a great blue heron stalking a secluded cove, a peaceful overlook of the placid Haw; a jut of ancient rock rising 12 ft out of the river – all of these await you, by trail and canoe, on this scenic guided tour of Saxapahaw Lake!
The trip begins with a modest 1.2 mile hike on the Haw River State Trail as it climbs past the 30 ft dam that forms Saxapahaw Lake. After getting a bird's eye view of the lake from the trail, we'll board a massive voyageur canoe to get a closer look, touring such highlights as Goose Island, the jump rock cliffs, and the sandbar islands.
The unique blend of perspectives offered by this trip will give you a fuller view of Saxapahaw Lake, where nature and human history have shaped each other for hundreds of years. The trail is not strenuous and your guides will do most of the work paddling, making this a trip almost anyone can enjoy!
