This tour traces the northward movement of New York's wealthiest residents through the 19th century. Our route starts at Madison Square, the beating heart of 19th and early 20th century New York. From there, we work our way uptown, discussing the lives of the city's wealthiest and most influential families as they tried to keep ahead of the city's ceaseless commercial and industrial growth. We discuss in depth just how, where, and why a "Gilded Age" occurred: what were its root causes and what were its long-term implications for New York's civic, social, architectural, and infrastructural development?
