Intro to Mountaineering
Foundational Skills for Winter Travel in the Mountains
What to Expect
Step into the world of winter mountaineering. With a guide, you'll practice ascending and descending mountainous terrain, using hiking, climbing, navigation, and technical skills to manage the challenges and hazards of the mountain environment safely.
In this one-day course, you'll learn and apply the basic skills of mountaineering, with all the technical equipment provided. We'll cover how to use an ice axe, including how to carry it, how to walk with it, and how to self-arrest. Your guide will teach you to move efficiently and confidently in crampons on moderate to steep terrain, and you'll learn tried-and-true methods for packing, layering, and fueling on the mountain. By the end of the day, you'll have a foundation for traveling in non-glaciated, snow- and ice-covered terrain.
