Three-Day E-Bike Rentals

There is no more thrilling and easy way to explore Southern Maine’s beautiful coastal routes than aboard an electric bike (e-bike). Let the electric assist feature do the hard work for you as the miles and hills just melt away.

At Coastal Maine Outdoors, we’re proud to offer the area’s largest rental selection of electric bicycles, with a variety of options for most adult riders. All our e-bikes are inspected regularly and maintained to the highest standards by our experienced mechanics. The tires are fully inflated, the chains are lubed, the brakes are calibrated, and the batteries are charged.

If you’ve never ridden an e-bike before, never fear; our friendly and patient team members will make sure you know what you’re doing before you leave our shop. (Visit the FAQ section below for more information for first-time e-bikers.)

All e-bike rentals include:
- Helmet
- Bike lock
- Area map
- Local advice on where to ride, what to see, and what to do in the area.

Multi-day rentals include a plug-in charger. If you need a basket for your belongings, we’ll make sure you get one. Drinks and sunscreen are available for purchase at pickup.

Important*: Our current e-bike rental fleet comprises only Class 2 e-bikes. This means they have peddle-assist technology, can reach up to 20 miles-per-hour, and are equipped with throttles (the option to propel the bike without pedaling). The Bikes

• Standard Adult E-Bike. An Aventon Pace cruiser (various generations) or similar, featuring three or four pedal assist modes, step-over or step-through frames, a cushy seat, an eight-speed gear shifter, fast-stopping hydraulic brakes with e-cutoff, a bright digital display, and thumb throttle. Top speed: 20 mph. 30 to 50 miles per full charge.
• Passenger E-Bike. An Aventon Abound cargo e-bike equipped with rear seat and hand rails for up to two passengers (one larger child/adult or two small children). Maximum passenger capacity: 200 pounds. (Your passenger may be any age, but keep in mind there are no restraints. Your passenger must be able to hold onto the handrails. People with limited mobility may have difficulty swinging their legs up and over the handrails to sit down.) Top speed: 20 mph. 30 to 50 miles per full charge.
• E-Tricycle. A Mokwheel Granite e-trike, featuring millisecond hydraulic brakes, a comfortable seat with backrest, front suspension, multiple pedal assist modes, a 7-speed gear shifter, rear cargo space, and wide tires. Top speed: 20 mph. 20 to 40 miles per full charge.

Height information: We stock e-bikes in a range of sizes: small, medium, and large. All have adjustable seat heights. In general, our bikes can accommodate riders 5-feet and taller. We will fit you with the appropriate bike size on the day of your rental. We may ask for your height during checkout so that we can get a comfortable bike ready for you.

Add-on (Do not rent without a bike rental.)

• Bike trailer for up to two children: Tow-behind trailer carries up to two children, maximum 40 pounds each.

Child seats and tag-a-long bikes are not compatible with our e-bikes. Click here for non-electric rentals.

PLEASE READ BEFORE BOOKING!

• This is a three-day (72 hour) rental. Click here for other rental periods.
• Please arrive as close to your pickup time as possible. If you arrive 30 minutes or later after your pickup time, we may rent your bike to someone else.
• Your rental period starts once you have your bike and our team member has finished the pickup procedure. Provided you arrive on time, we will not penalize you for the time it takes to check in, get fitted for a helmet, and receive instruction on your bike.
• You are expected to operate your bicycle safely and according to all the applicable state and local laws. Click here for an overview of safe riding practices and bike law in Maine. Do not ride on the sidewalk or against the direction of traffic. Stop at all red stoplights and stop signs.
• Keep in mind that most of the riding around Kennebunk and Kennebunkport is on the road, shared with cars, trucks, buses, and pedestrians. There are no coastal off-road bike paths in this area. That said, the traffic around town moves at slower speeds, some roads have shoulders to ride in, and the Kennebunks are known as bike-friendly communities. Our team members will be happy to recommend a safe and fun riding route for your family or group. (Read more about the local riding conditions on our website.)
• Helmets are required with all e-bike rentals. Your brain is important to us! Feel free to bring your own helmet or borrow one of ours. We have all sizes. Every helmet is sanitized after use.

Afterhours Dropoff — Not a Problem!

Our shop closes at 6 p.m. throughout the summer season. If you plan to return your bike later than that (for example, if you pick your bike up at 4 p.m. and it’s due back at 8 p.m.), no worries. We will issue you a lock and show you where to lock up your bike and where to drop the key. Half-day rentals with afterhours dropoff must be back by the time we open in the morning.
