About
For over 60 years, the Imperial Calcasieu Museum has sat in the shade of the mighty Sallier Oak offering guests to experience how deep their roots run in local history. Just as the Sallier Oak has perceived the history of our area in its 375-year life, the Imperial Calcasieu Museum invites you see history come to life through its vibrant programming of fine art exhibits and cultural experiences.
The museum houses a rotating collection of artifacts and memorabilia depicting life in the old Imperial Calcasieu region from the Native Americans to the present. There are numerous items of special interest including the steering wheel of the Borealix Rex, historical maps of Louisiana, and other unique artifacts significant to Southwest Louisiana’s history. The Museum also boasts a permanent art collection including works of John James Audubon, Boyd Cruise, Angela Gregory, and Lynda Benglis.
The museum also houses the Gibson-Barham Gallery, a 1,500 square foot exhibition space, that hosts visual artists and historic & cultural exhibits on a revolving basis. Exhibits are self-curated and produced to have educational viability and meet established education criteria to foster the visual arts and preserve the unique culture and heritage of Southwest Louisiana.
