What to Expect
The Oscar J. Tolmas Military Sailing Program is for active military members and veterans who served in our armed forces, thanks to support from the Oscar J. Tolmas Charitable Trust. Participants learn the fundamentals of sailing on the Colgate 26 keelboat, as well as basic nomenclature, safety, knots, rigging, steering, how sails work, and the rules of the road.
Our facilities and fleet of boats can accommodate veterans with disabilities or mobility challenges. We provide specialized equipment, instruction, and support to enable veterans of all abilities to participate in sailing and enjoy the benefits of being on the water.
This 10-hour course will be divided into 4 classes meeting on consecutive Saturdays and Sundays. Each class is two and a half hours.
Includes
Hands-on, on-the-water sailing instruction on Lake Pontchartrain
Comprehensive series of lessons covering sailing fundamentals and safety
Use of all boats, sails, and required sailing equipment
A Personal Flotation Device (PFD) will be provided to all participants and must be worn on the boats at all times
Restrictions
Participants must be 18+ years of age.
