The Lantern Tour
Guided 3 Hour Adventure | 1 Mile Hike
What to Expect
Step back in time...
and experience the mine as the early workers once did—by lantern light.
Your tour begins with a docent-guided walk through our underground museum galleries, where you’ll explore the history, science, and stories of the Hutchinson Salt Company. From there, you’ll venture into the darkness on a one-hour, one-mile interpretive hike along the abandoned railbeds used by miners in the 1950s.
Guided only by your lantern, you’ll discover how miners lived, worked, and navigated the vast underground network. Learn how the rail system once powered the mine’s operations and see relics left behind in untouched areas rarely viewed by the public.
The Lantern Tour offers an immersive, unforgettable glimpse into the life of a miner—650 feet below the Kansas prairie.
