About
When wealthy 19th century German brewers needed a place to build, they picked Wicker Park, filling its leafy streets with towering red brick mansions. Since then, the neighborhood has lived many lives: a hotbed of labor unrest, a thriving Polish community that rivaled Warsaw, a forgotten hinterland, a base of Puerto Rican activism, a home to galleries and punks, and the Next Lincoln Park (or the opposite of Lincoln Park, depending on who you ask). Join me to see this history in bricks and buildings. Along the way, you'll learn how Chicago became the brick capital of the world, and how technological innovation turned the humble building brick into The Perfect Brick, a work of art all its own.
