AIDA 1+2 Beginner Freediving Course
A two-day beginner freediving course focused on safety, relaxation, technique, and confident progression. Students learn theory, confined-water skills, open-water depth diving, equalization, buddy procedures, and rescue techniques.

What you will learn
Theory covers the freediving breathing cycle, basic physiology, equalization, equipment, disciplines, technique, and safety. Confined-water training includes static and dynamic apnea, relaxation, breathing, finning, buddy procedures, recovery breathing, and rescue skills. In open water, students practice equalization, duck diving, vertical swimming, body position, turns, buoyancy, free immersion, constant weight, and depth safety.
Schedule
Day 1 — 7:30 AM–2:00 PM
Meet at 7:30 AM near Duke Kahanamoku Lagoon in Waikiki. Day 1 includes theory, confined-water training, static and dynamic apnea, recovery breathing, buddy procedures, safety and rescue skills, equalization, and preparation for open-water training. The exact order may change based on conditions and student progress.
Day 2 — 7:30 AM–1:00 PM
Meet at 7:30 AM near Duke Kahanamoku Lagoon in Waikiki. After completing any remaining theory and preparation, students participate in supervised open-water depth training. Training depth depends on safety, ocean conditions, comfort, demonstrated ability, and individual progression. The course concludes with any remaining assessment requirements.
Depth and certification
The current AIDA 2 certification depth requirement is 12m. The maximum training depth for this course is 20m. Reaching 20m is not guaranteed or required for certification.
Booking and attending the course does not guarantee certification. AIDA certification is awarded only after the student successfully completes all applicable theory, confined-water, open-water, safety, rescue, and performance requirements.

A wetsuit is highly recommended. If you need to rent one, arrange the rental before the morning of your course. Fins, mask, snorkel, and weight belt are provided.
Prerequisites
- Be at least 18 years old, or 16–17 with parent or guardian consent
- Swim at least 200m nonstop without fins, or 300m nonstop with mask, fins, and snorkel
- Be comfortable in the water
- Speak and read English
Freediving disciplines
- Static apnea: Breath-holding while floating face down in confined water.
- Dynamic apnea: Horizontal underwater swimming in confined water, with or without fins.
- Free immersion: Descending and ascending by pulling on the dive line.
- Constant weight: Descending and ascending with the same weight, using fins or no fins without pulling on the line.
Safety and individual progression always take priority over depth.
