Gyotaku Fish Printing
Create authentic Japanese fish prints using real fish & traditional techniques from the 1800s
What to Expect
Create authentic Japanese fish prints using real fish, rice paper, and traditional techniques dating back to the 1800s.
Gyotaku is the ancient Japanese art of transferring an ink print of a real fish onto rice paper. Created in 19th-century Japan, fishermen used to print their catch to compete with other fishermen and prove the size of their fish. Over time, the art of Gyotaku evolved into a method of capturing a hyper-realistic depiction of fish.
Gyotaku has been adopted in Hawaii for generations as a practice meant to capture the memories of the catch for many local fishermen.
Join us for a cultural dive into this fascinating art. As a part of this experience, you will learn about Gyotaku's origins and practice and how to print your own prints of locally sourced fish. After, you'll be able to detail your print to your liking and take home a piece of art crafted by your hands.
