The Importance of Choosing Locally Sourced Leis for Sustainable Tourism on Oʻahu

Aloha mai kākou!

When you arrive in Hawaiʻi, one of the most iconic symbols of aloha is the lei—a beautiful floral garland given with love and respect. But did you know that where your lei comes from can make a big difference?

Most orchid leis sold in Hawaiʻi are actually made with flowers imported from Thailand. While they may look beautiful, these imported blooms come with hidden costs—high carbon footprints from long-distance shipping, less support for local farmers, and fewer truly Hawaiian lei-making traditions being passed down.

By choosing locally sourced leis, you’re helping to sustain Hawaiʻi’s environment, economy, and culture. Here’s why it matters:

🌱 Supports Local Farmers – Hawaiʻi’s flower farmers work hard to grow stunning native and tropical flowers like plumeria, maile, pikake, and lehua. When you buy a locally made lei, you directly support these small farms and keep agriculture thriving in the islands.

🌿 Reduces Environmental Impact – Importing flowers from thousands of miles away requires fuel, refrigeration, and packaging. Choosing local flowers cuts down on carbon emissions and helps protect Hawaiʻi’s delicate ecosystem.

🌺 Preserves Hawaiian Culture – Each fresh floral lei is a reflection of Hawaiian culture and tradition, preserving both the symbolic significance of the flowers and foliage used, as well as the time-honored methods by which they are crafted. Hawaiian lei-making is an ancient art form, passed down through generations, with each lei carrying deep meaning. A maile lei symbolizes honor and respect, a plumeria or ti leaf lei celebrates special moments, and the intoxicating scent of a puakenikeni lei is a tribute to love and affection. From delicate flowers strung kui style to intricate foliage woven haku style, these techniques have been practiced for centuries. By choosing a locally crafted lei, you are not only embracing a cherished tradition but also supporting the artisans who are keeping this cultural practice alive for future generations."
