The Black Water Expedition
$235 for Certified Divers | 2+ Hours
What to Expect
This is not a dive like any other.
Every night, as darkness falls over the Pacific, billions of organisms begin one of the greatest migrations on Earth. Creatures from the mesopelagic zone — the deep, lightless middle layer of the ocean, between 200 and 1,000 meters down — rise toward the surface to feed. Things that most humans will never see. Things that most divers have never encountered. Translucent squid. Alien-looking larval fish. Siphonophores stretching meters long. Bioluminescent animals that glow and pulse in the dark water around you.
The Black Water Expedition puts you directly in the middle of it.
We motor out offshore after dark and drop a line of powerful lights into the deep blue — hundreds of feet of open water beneath you, nothing below but the abyss. You descend along the line and enter a world that operates completely outside normal awareness. It is disorienting. It is humbling. It is one of the most extraordinary things a diver can do anywhere on the planet.
Kona is one of a small number of places in the world where blackwater diving is reliably accessible, and our guides are among the most experienced in the field. Your safety, your orientation, and your sense of wonder are in excellent hands.
