About this tour

Witness the raw power of Pele and the resilience of Hawaiʻi's land and people. The Fissure 8 Tour is an unforgettable guided journey to the site of the 2018 Kīlauea eruption. Led by a knowledgeable local guide and Leilani Estates resident with direct access to Fissure 8, you'll walk across surreal lava fields where entire communities once stood. See the towering Fissure 8 cone, hardened lava rivers, and terrain that emerged from months of volcanic activity and forever changed the landscape of Lower Puna.

At Aloha ʻĀina Tours, we emphasize deep respect for the land (ʻāina) and the spirit of Pele. This tour is more than a hike: it is a powerful story of destruction, rebirth, and the enduring strength of nature and community.

This all-inclusive Big Island adventure combines the amazing Volcano Explorer experience as well as Historic Hilo Town.

Fissure 8
- “Ahu ʻAilāʻau” is the Hawaiian name for Fissure 8, a prominent vent that erupted during the 2018 Kīlauea eruption. The name means “Shrine of the Forest Eater.”
- The 2018 Lower Puna eruption was a volcanic event on Kīlauea volcano's East Rift Zone that began on May 3, 2018. It is related to the larger eruption of Kīlauea that began on January 3, 1983.
- 60-meter-high fountains of lava from Fissure 8 created a rapidly moving flow that progressed 13 km in just five days, entered the ocean at Kapoho Bay, and destroyed over 500 homes.
