What to Expect

Learn More

This guided trip includes a short 15-minute boat ride from Bull River Marina to Shark Tooth Island. Once ashore, you’ll spend about 2½ hours exploring the island with a knowledgeable shark tooth guide who will teach you how to search for fossils and identify your finds.

The Savannah River is regularly dredged to maintain the shipping channel, which brings fossil material to the surface and deposits it along the shoreline — making this area especially productive for fossil hunting. Guests commonly find modern shark teeth, ancient megalodon teeth, marine fossils, mammal fossils, and if you’re lucky, historical artifacts!

Tools for digging and sifting are provided, and your guide will help you learn where and how to look for the best chances of finding teeth. While exploring the island, you’ll also have close-up views of the large cargo ships traveling through the Savannah River shipping channel.

Shark Tooth Island is only accessible at low tide, so trip times vary each day based on tide conditions. Guests must be comfortable stepping off the front of the boat into ankle to knee-deep water to reach the shoreline, and you should expect to get wet, sandy, and possibly muddy during the hunt.
