What to Expect
Half-Day Alpine Tunnel UTV Adventure (Pitkin / Taylor Park, Colorado)
Ride back in time on one of Colorado’s most historic and scenic UTV routes. The Half-Day Alpine Tunnel Adventure follows the original Denver, South Park & Pacific Railroad grade as it climbs into the high country toward the Continental Divide.
This ride is perfect for beginners, families, and history enthusiasts. The terrain is generally easy with some bumps from the historic railbed, making it a comfortable but engaging experience for riders of all skill levels.
Along the way, you’ll pass through beautiful alpine scenery, forested sections, and open mountain terrain while following the exact path of a narrow-gauge railroad built in the early 1880s. Informational signs and visible remnants along the route bring the history of this incredible engineering feat to life.
The destination is the Alpine Tunnel Historic Site at over 11,500 feet—once the highest railroad tunnel in North America and the first bore through the Continental Divide in Colorado. At the site, you can explore remains of the telegraph office, engine house foundations, turntable, and sections of original rail, along with interpretive displays that tell the story of the railroad and its construction.
This is an out-and-back ride, allowing you to take in the scenery and history at a relaxed pace before returning to Pitkin.
If you’re looking for a unique mix of Colorado history, high-country views, and an easygoing UTV experience, the Alpine Tunnel Adventure delivers.
