Silverton Classic Backcountry Areas
Ages 8+ • Up to 4 People • 8-10 Hours
What to Expect
Silverton has a good collection of backcountry terrain suitable for a variety of skill levels. While they're not significantly far from each other they do present different opportunities, aspects, and options depending on what your party may be interested in.
Pick one of the classic backcountry skiing/riding areas
- Cement Creek and Silverton North: with a few smaller treed areas around Prospector's Gulch and Gladstone this is a great place to find pockets of powder or safer options in challenging avalanche conditions. Later in the season some of the bigger peaks around Minnehaha Basin yield more intimidating lines.
- Kendall Mountain and Silverton South: looming over the town of Silverton you can see several avalanche paths. While they can be a good tour in the spring there are several good options on the backside in more challenging avalanche conditions.
- Eureka and Beyond: When the road up to Animas Forks opens this is where you want to be for the big steep lines around Engineer and Cinnamon Pass. There are also number of peaks like Eureka and Cinnamon Mountain for big open alpine faces.
