What to Expect
The Okihi Fossil Field Station is a premium, small-group fossil discovery experience set along the Kern River, where visitors uncover real 15-million-year-old marine fossils from an ancient ocean that once covered this part of California.
This is not a large, self-serve public dig site. Each experience is intentionally limited in size, giving you your own fossil discovery station and plenty of time to explore. You’ll work with genuine fossil-bearing marine sediment, learning how to wash, screen, sort, recognize, and identify the fossils hidden within it—with our team there to help along the way.
And you keep what you find. Guests regularly discover shark teeth, ray teeth, shells, fish remains, and fossilized bone from marine mammals and other animals that lived here millions of years ago. Every session is different, and every discovery is real.
Set within Okihi’s private riverside property, the experience is quiet, uncrowded, and intentionally hands-on. Between discoveries, guests can enjoy the Kern River, shaded picnic areas, hiking trails, wildlife, and the natural surroundings that make Okihi such a special place.
This is more than fossil hunting. It’s a chance to hold California’s ancient past in your hands, learn the story behind what you find, and take your discoveries home with you.
